CBSE Class 11 Chemistry Exam: Top scoring Topics and How to Prepare

Class 11th is as crucial a time as class 12th. Most students believe that class 11th can be taken lightly as it seems easier in comparison to class 12th. But it is not so. Class 11th forms the base for any subject that you choose for your future. Especially if you are from the science side, be it PCM - Physics, Chemistry, and Maths, or PCB - Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, Chemistry makes up for both the streams. Therefore, you must balance your life and studies in such a manner to get the top score in class 11th as well. There should be no scope for any leniency when it comes to studying for classes 11th and 12th. As previously discussed, class 11th provides the basics for all the subjects that continue to a higher level in class 12th. This stands the same for Chemistry as well. Chemistry can be a critical subject for science students. It is made up of three parts, namely, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry. You can use the NCERT to check the weightage of marks allotted to specific sections. The important and top-scoring topics from the three parts of chemistry can be discussed as follows.

1. Physical Chemistry

For physical chemistry, you need to be very clear with the theory. This can be done with self-studies, tuition, or simply being attentive in the classroom. It is also recommended that you at least revise regularly what is covered in the classroom and thereafter clear doubts the next day. Clearing doubts alongside will save any issue of discrepancies at the end of the term. Another thing that will help you majorly is a good grasp of the mathematical concepts. Be clear about your basics at least. Being clear with maths concepts and formulas can fetch you a top score, as you'll be able to perform better for topics such as chemical kinetics, surface chemistry, etc. The topics that may ask for mathematical knowledge have been allotted 23 marks making up for 33% of the total paper. You can use class 11 chemistry NCERT solutions to understand the concepts clearly and precisely. You can use the NCERT solutions for practicing the numerical portions and at the end solve the sample papers for the exam-like questions.

2. Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry consists of topics such as Alcohols, Phenols, and Ethers, Polymers, Organic compounds containing nitrogen, Chemistry in Everyday Life, etc. These topics make up for 28 marks of the paper and generally deal with the everyday existing chemicals and compounds. To do well in organic chemistry, the utmost important thing to maintain is clarity about the basic concepts. You should be attentive in the class, actively ask questions wherever required, study regularly at home on your own, and take tuition if need be. Practice the chemical concepts and reactions daily. You can use your textbook or NCERT books to practice the questions. Some important topics comprise of 1, 2, 3 alcohol reactions and amines reactions. Reactions such as Williamson, Clemmensen reduction, etc., are frequently asked in the examination therefore due importance should be accorded to them while studying. You can make separate notes for the reactions and concepts that feel difficult to your understanding.

3. Inorganic Chemistry

Inorganic Chemistry majorly relates to the periodic table. This can be a crucial stage for many students. The most important tip for this section is to go through the NCERT solutions thoroughly and as many times as possible. The general principles, coordination compounds, and elements are the topics that make up inorganic chemistry. Being attentive in your class and tuition, giving time at home to the subject, and practicing as much as possible from the NCERT solutions will help you significantly in scoring the most from the 19 marks allotted to this section.

Some general tips and tricks that can be used for studying chemistry adequately are:

1. Frame a timetable specific to Chemistry

Chemistry needs regular revision along with studying and clearing concepts. Make a time- table that allows time for both covering new topics and revising the covered topics. This should be apart from what is done in the class and tuition. The timetable is meant for your self-study session which is necessary if you wish to achieve a perfect score in the subject.

2. Formulas

Make separate notes for the various formulas relating to different topics. This will help you revise easily at the end of the syllabus. Practice as many questions as you can relating to the given formulas as practicing is the key to cracking the chemical code.

3. Chemical reactions

Studying chemical reactions can be confusing at times. It is suggestive that you write down and understand these reactions as many times as possible to gain a clear outlook about the same. Be sure you are giving due importance to the part that asks for it.

4. NCERT solutions

NCERT solutions are the most recommended source to study chemistry from. It provides the matter and explanation in a much easier and understandable language. Go through the NCERT books as many times as possible and necessary. Take up all the questions and numerical that is provided in the books and do not leave even a single page unturned.

5. Sample tests and question papers.

Sample tests and question papers provide you with an idea as to what is expected of you in the examination. It prepares you well for all the types of questions meant for examinations. It gives you an idea as to some repetitively asked questions which are of utmost importance and should be on your tips. It is possibly the best way to check your progress and know your weak points to be able to work on them later.

Chemistry in class 11th can be comparatively easier than class 12th. But if it is left untouched for the last moment, it can turn into a chemically reactive nightmare. To be able to score well in board examinations, you should take class 11th as equally important. Only when you're clear about the concepts of the class 11th syllabus, can you expect to ace your boards.
